The IADC-UTP Student Chapter, in collaboration with Kwantis and ID3, held an online technical talk “Beyond the Drill: Transforming Operations with Kwantis.” This event was designed to provide students from diverse academic backgrounds, including Petroleum Engineering, Information Technology (IT), and Computer Science, with a deeper understanding of the integration of digital technologies in the energy sector. As the oil and gas industry undergoes significant digital transformation, such initiatives are crucial for preparing future professionals for the rapidly evolving landscape.

The Role of Digital Transformation in Oil and Gas

As the oil and gas industry continues to evolve, advanced analytics, machine learning, and real-time data monitoring have become critical tools in optimizing drilling operations. These technologies are key to reducing non-productive time, enhancing overall efficiency, and ensuring safety. Kwantis, an active contributor to the digital transformation of the energy sector, has been working to develop innovative solutions that combine modern technology with the practical needs of the industry.

During the talk, industry experts Laura Posada, Camila Medele, and Fabio Concina introduced Kwantis’ key products: the ID3 software for real-time performance monitoring, and Riskturn for risk management assessment. Together, these advanced technologies are streamlining drilling processes, improving operational performance, and minimizing risks.

Key Topics in the Talk

Students who attended the talk had the opportunity to explore several key topics, which highlighted the transformative power of data analytics and digital technologies in the energy sector:

  • The role of data analytics in optimizing well performance and drilling operations.
  • The use of real-time monitoring systems for ensuring efficiency in the field.
  • The application of machine learning in data quality and drilling risk management.
  • The value of risk-based operations planning
  • The future of digital technologies in oil and gas, with an emphasis on cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and big data.

Bridging the Gap Between Engineering and Digital Solutions

This event was particularly valuable in bridging the gap between traditional engineering principles and modern digital solutions. It offered students from various disciplines a clear perspective on how interdisciplinary knowledge is becoming increasingly important in today’s energy industry.

For Petroleum Engineering students, the talk focused on the technical challenges faced in the field, highlighting how digital technologies can be leveraged to improve well integrity, operational outcomes, and overall efficiency. On the other hand, IT and Computer Science students gained insights into the digital infrastructure supporting real-time data collection and analysis. They also learned how machine learning is shaping the future of complex industrial environments, emphasizing the critical role that IT solutions play in this transformation.
