ID3 and kwantis have launched three collaborative projects with Heriot-Watt University, bringing together students and researchers from both the Dubai and Edinburgh campuses.

Running through mid-August, the projects are supervised by engineers from kwantis and ID3 and are designed to explore innovative, data-driven approaches to drilling performance optimization. This collaboration strengthens the connection between academia and industry while contributing to the development of next-generation drilling technologies.

Research Initiatives for Drilling Performance and Cost Optimization

The three master’s thesis projects focus on key areas of drilling optimization, leveraging advanced data analytics and historical operational data within ID3 to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and support better engineering decisions. The first investigates drill bit performance to improve bit selection and reduce non-productive time. The second examines the evolution of drilling parameters to identify operational trends and support better decision-making. The third analyzes well operation costs to identify cost drivers and improve cost efficiency. Together, the projects aim to deliver practical, data-driven tools that enhance drilling performance and operational planning.

Strengthening Industry–Academia Collaboration

These collaborative initiatives reflect the shared commitment of kwantis, ID3, and Heriot-Watt University to advancing innovation in drilling technologies. By combining academic research with industry expertise and real operational data, the collaboration provides students with valuable hands-on experience while delivering practical solutions that can enhance drilling performance and operational efficiency across the energy sector.
